Birchwood sits south of Portage Ave on the north shore of the Assiniboine River, bounded by Sturgeon Creek to the west, and Assiniboine Park to the east. The Charleswood Bridge at Moray St heads south into the Assiniboine South community area. Beyond the Portage Ave entrance into Assiniboine Park, there is one other city park.
